More : The University of Warsaw was established in 1816, when the partitions of Poland separated the central region of Poland from the older academic center in Cracow. The School of Law and the Medical School were first established in the Duchy of Warsaw. In 1816 Alexander I the Russian Czar (at the same time the King of Poland) gave his permission to create the university, made up of five faculties: Law and Administration, Medicine, Philosophy, Theology, Art and Humanities. The number of students gradually increased to 800. There were 40-50 professors. After several years of relative liberalism, Russian authorities restricted the university's freedom, and when an overhelming majority of the students participated in the November Uprising 1830, the university was closed down.
