More : The American Institute of Iranian Studies (AIIrS) is a non-profit, non-governmental overseas research organization. It is an academic consortium, of which the members are universities and museums in North America with interests in the study of Iranian culture and civilization. From 1969 until late 1979 the Institute maintained a Center in Tehran with a resident American director. In addition to providing hostel facilities and the means of bringing together American and Iranian colleagues, the director formally represented American scholars and students to the Iranian government in all official matters connected with the pursuit of research in Iran. In 1979 political difficulties between the governments of Iran and the United States resulted in the withdrawal of the resident American director and the closing of the Tehran Center. At the time, the Institute devoted itself to serving its members by promoting Iranian Studies in the United States. It offered grants each year to assist advanced graduate students in completing their dissertations; offered an annual prize for the best dissertation in Iranian Studies; began a publication program by publishing a monograph on paleolithic archaeology in Iran; and held joint conferences on Iranian Studies. CURRENT ACTIVITIES Recently, new programs have developed enabling the Institute to work with the government of Iran to establish reciprocal exchanges and cooperation between the American and Iranian academic communities and to reestablish an American presence in Iran. Toward this aim, the AIIrS has established a six-month research fellowship for a junior faculty member. The recipient will represent AIIrS in Iran. The Institute also offers two-month fellowships to graduate students for advanced language study at the Dehkhoda Institute in Tehran; two-to-four-week fellowships to senior scholars to help them become reacquainted with current research resources in Iran; and a one-month fellowship for a scholar to serve as bibliographer investigating the history of research in Iran since 1979.
